Headset or speakers: choose for your room

Before comparing audio specifications, decide who should hear the sound. A headset and speakers serve different needs. Jess has not tested these two models: no sound-quality or comfort assessment is invented here.

Start with the people around you

In a shared room, a headset directs listening to its wearer. Speakers make more sense when sound can be heard throughout the room. This does not mean a headset blocks outside noise: isolation depends on the model and fit.

Separate hearing from being heard

For game chat or calls, you also need a microphone input. The Cloud III Wired includes a microphone; the Z207 are speakers and do not replace your mic. Before buying, make a short recording with your current equipment: the problem may be the wrong microphone selected in the software.

List the devices you use

List each device: computer, console or phone. Check audio output and microphone compatibility separately, including supplied adapters. Do not confuse the Cloud III Wired with Wireless versions. The Z207 offer Bluetooth and a 3.5 mm input; confirm the right connection for your device.

Plan everyday controls

Locate volume controls, microphone mute and cable storage. For speakers, measure room on each side of the screen. For a headset, check return options if you cannot try its fit: a specification sheet cannot describe comfort on your head.

Before ordering

  • I identified who should hear the sound.
  • I checked sound and microphone support on each device.
  • I tried a recording with my current setup.

Choose the listening setup before the model. A headset with a microphone and speakers are not interchangeable for every use.
