External or internal SSD: which fits your needs?

Start with the problem to solve
Want to carry photos between two computers? Start by considering an external drive. Want to replace the drive installed in a computer? Begin with that computer’s documentation. Note its exact model, bay type and whether drive replacement is possible before selecting a product.
External: check the port, cable and operating systems
The T7 Shield is a USB SSD. Identify the ports on the devices you will use and plan the appropriate cable. The USB-C shape alone does not tell you the port speed. To share files between operating systems, also check the drive format before transferring your library.
Internal: confirm the bay before choosing capacity
The A400 shown here is a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. It does not fit directly into an M.2 NVMe-only slot. Check your computer manual for connectors, space and any mounting parts. Also plan how to reinstall or transfer the operating system; replacing hardware does not automatically move your files.
Keep an independent copy
Moving all your documents to a new drive does not create a backup if the old copy is deleted. Keep another copy of important files and check that a few documents open correctly after transfer. Before an internal replacement, prepare this copy separately from the drive you are removing.
